|Start Date||Start - End Time||Venue||Places Taken|
Duration: 4 hours
Coordinator: Mrs Felicity Couperthwaite
Presenter: Mrs Felicity Couperthwaite
This is the first year that this course is being offered to Staff at UQ, and HR, OH&S and Security Officers are encouraged to enrol for this course. It is expected that more iteration of this course will be offered in the future.
This course will teach participants skills required to assist someone who may be having suicidal thoughts and behaviours.
The 4-hour Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) for the Suicidal Person Course is based on the Mental Health First Aid Guidelines for Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviours.
The MHFA for the Suicidal Person Course is not a post intervention course and is not recommended for individuals recently bereaved by suicide. The MHFA for the Suicidal Person Course is not a therapy or a support group and it is important that people undertaking the course are feeling relatively robust when they undertake it.
This course compliments the 2 day Standard MHFA offered to staff, but does not replace the need to complete the 2 day course, nor is it necessary to have completed the Standard MHFA course before attending this course.
Learning outcomes of the course include:
- Understanding accurate information about suicide rates and risk factors in the Australian context
- Reviewing the first aid guidelines of how to intervene when someone is experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviours
- Practicing these skills in a safe environment.
