This interactive session will explore strategies for managing as well as maximising the effectiveness of culturally diverse advisory teams. In particular, it examines the way culture shapes ideas and expectations regarding teaching, learning and knowledge and how these differences can lead to mis-communication between advisors and HDR students. This session will also explore how UQs research culture can be enriched by students and advisors from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Case Studies based on the experiences of international students and advisors will be workshopped and the strategies used by advisors experienced in intercultural communication will be discussed. This session is appropriate for early career and experienced HDR Advisors. PGCs are also welcome to attend.
This course will enable participants to:
1. Identify cultural and linguistic issues experienced by international research students
2. Develop strategies to facilitate effective intercultural communication between culturally
diverse advisors and students.
3. Gain a better understanding of the support available to international students and advisors.
4. Reflect and learn from their own and others experiences.
